I LOVE MY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

The way He shows up for me with all His love and attention blows the God maniac here away. Like this morning, I woke up reading this old post in my appointment with Him, about some conversations with my sister, Verona:

“At one point, I’m listening to Rob Bell’s podcast and his guest, Don Golden, talked about the slaves from Egypt being freed and how God is calling us ALL to be freed from anything that is holding us back from being the people He is calling us to be. I got so excited calling her back, saying we have to free ourselves from our personal mental slavery and start thinking the thoughts that God would have us thinking not this JUNK we’ve been getting sad and depressed over. The words from Bob Marley’s song came to mind, “Free yourself from mental slavery.” After talking to her, I sent her a text, “Google Bob Marley’s song. Wow, He is speaking directly to us.”

Minutes later, God reveals His intimate Presence with us. She walks past her nephew’s bedroom, and he is UNBELIEVABLY playing this very Bob Marley song, “EMANCIPATE YOURSELF FROM MENTAL SLAVERY.” Honestly, I can’t get over the sweetness of God, letting me and her know that He Himself is with us as we take on this superhero role for our families, all for His glory. This was His way of encouraging us both to continue joyously carrying the crosses He has assigned to us. God, ANYTHING FOR YOU!”

Fast forward an hour later after reading this, I’m in our kitchen cleaning and playing music, and what song incredibly plays out of my library of close to 1,000 songs:

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds” – Redemption Song, Bob Marley

You may call this a coincidence, but it was God once again revealing His invisible Presence with me. I loved a conversation with my daughter, Ember, today. I told her how I’m getting my head back together, but that while I was down going through my little dark time, God stood strong with me. The lyrics of this song perfectly articulate what has happened:

“But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly”

I got Ember to this beautiful, state-of-the-art, top-rated university in New York in my terrible state of mind. My other daughter, Julie, is waiting to hear back from the top universities in the world for acceptance and scholarship offers. My sons are both aiming for all A’s at their school where they are establishing a solid work ethic and learning responsibility, as EVERY DAY they MUST focus and give their best. My nephew, Duro, is a different person now since he started his internship with Amazon. I’m so proud of the business here that I’ve been trying to get back on track, that I have no doubt that God Himself is helping me. And hubby and I cooked Nigerian food together for the boys through video call today. I got to tell him how overwhelmingly thankful we are for this big sacrifice he has made for our family by allowing us all to leave him in Nigeria while we are in the US. “I will never forget this!” I told him.

I say all that to say, don’t play around with your relationship with God. Seek to please Him all day by making wise decisions from His perspective: ‘God, what would You have me to do here?’ Let that be our goal. In my weak, sad, and depressed state, He overwhelmingly loved and supported me. So much so that I’m running with Kevin’s statement from the other day, “If Jesus can ask God to forgive the people who nailed him to the cross, who can’t we forgive?” We must continually wipe the slates clean for ourselves and others when we mess up. Let’s be God’s superheroes in the world, especially in being the glue to hold our families together.

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can fight against the devil’s evil tricks…That is why you need to put on God’s full armor. Then on the day of evil you will be able to stand strong. And when you have finished the whole fight, you will still be standing.” Amen!
